KAUPAPA

Collaborating with our community, our partners and sponsors to create Kuraconnect Community Activations, Pop Ups and Flagship Events. To grow a sense of pride, connection and opportunities for both whanau and our rangatahi.  Through the sporting codes and the creative arts creating a platform for them to reach their full potential, within our Papakura Community.

About us

In 2018 the Papakura Athletic and Harrier Club, (PAHC) Mel Tipene, Joe Tipene and Tony Tumai met to discuss their concern for our Papakura rangatahi who they saw ‘just hanging’ and not engaged. They asked the question ‘what can we do’ to make a difference for the whanau and rangatahi in our Papakura Community through engagement with sport. They presented their ‘Kura Connect’ concept to Tony Kake at the Papakura Marae and Mikaira Pau from E Tu Whanau and together they all drew up the Kuraconnect model and name.

The first event was to pilot a PAHC ‘run jump throw’ event over four weeks to activate whanau at the Papakura Marae before their Thursday community dinner. They then approached Touch NZ to collaboratively run 2x pilot sports projects Turbo Touch at Papakura High School and Touch Rugby at Massey Park, Papakura. We knew that sport played a big part in a collective community engagement and it covers all age groups and whanau.

In 2019, the Papakura Athletic and Harrier Club, (PAHC) Mel Tipene, Joe Tipene, and Tony Tumai, Tony Kake Papakura Marae, Mikaira Pau E Tu Whanau and Touch NZ invited the extended Papakura Community to discuss this Community Driven initiative, Kuraconnect and the way forward…comprising representatives from Papakura Athletics Harrier Club, the  Papakura Marae, E Tu Whanau, Touch NZ, CLM Community Sport (CLM) Papakura Local Board, Papakura Bears and Papakura Touch Rugby, Papakura Basketball, the Health Promotion Agency, Touch NZ, ACC, E Tū Whānau, Counties Manukau DHB, Genesis, Bruce Pulman Park, Counties Manukau Sport (CMS) Painga Project and Papakura High School.

We have since added the creative arts to our Pop Ups, Activations and Flagship Community Events. We want all young people to be an active part of what we do so we will be also using our events to equip/mentor and develop our future leaders in every aspect of running a community event.

Papakura CommUNITY Volunteers

Vision ‘To be active, responsive and caring in times of need’

Mission ‘Connecting the Papakura CommUNITY through fun, culture, opportunity and togetherness.’

Papakura CommUNITY Volunteers are the team that delivers community support to participating agencies, during a national disaster, or an event that they need community engagement with. Also, the participating agencies will support the initiatives and the needs of the local community. This group would be made up of volunteers from all ages from the local community and representatives from all participating community organisations. They will facilitate and support the community with collaborations, matching needs and delivery. The community accesses the services via community networks, Kuraconnect Website, FB and Print Fliers.

Two initiatives:

  1. Establish a Papakura team of trained and equipped community leaders, and an army of volunteers to be a community arm of the Participating Agencies, Police, Auckland Emergency Agency, Civil Defence, NZ Army during a National Crisis.

  2. Establish a Papakura CommUNITY Volunteers, a team of volunteers that will support the initiatives and the needs of the local community. With the support from National Student Volunteer and Army Volunteering Auckland. Create an online hub for our PCVolunteers to keep everyone updated and keep engaged with each other. It will also be a platform to give updated information to our community.

Participating Agencies, Kuraconnect and the Community partnership team will develop a solution to support the following activities with the PCVolunteers

  • Supporting and keeping informed the Papakura community organisations, NGO’s, churches, NFP’s, social Design and implement communication links, so the community's enquiries and needs are received, and we have engagement with our community.

  • Allow people to document and share their needs quickly with us, to plan and process needs into a Centralised place

Acknowledging the Tuakana-Teina aged-youth relationships: Mentoring and transfer of skills and experience from our elders to our youth (Men’s Sheds), youth delivering youth workshops on life values, CV writing etc. This Instils pride for the older person who was able to transfer life skills and experience to the youth.

Opportunities and positive outcomes by being a Volunteer.

It provides mana for the young person and creates a sense of pride to be contributing to building a thriving community which cares for each other. They will develop transferable skills and add to their CV. Become community minded
